User Software

ALERT! WARNING: This page is obsolete.

Please consider using the cluster installation method outlined in the link instead of the instructions in this page.

If you are running a cluster or want others to use your computer, you can probably install these in a common directory. In the examples below, the location is the user home directory so please change that.

gLite

Stop See the yum method for installing this. The method described here is for a single user without root access.

Fetch the tar files from the LCG site; in this example, the two files downloaded are untar-ed below:

  • fetch the files and unpack:
mkdir ~/gLite; cd ~/gLite
gtar zxf glite-UI-3.1.0-1-external.tar.gz
gtar zxf glite-UI-3.1.0-1.tar.gz

  • create a file ~/gLite/site-info.def:
INSTALL_ROOT=$HOME/gLite
JAVA_LOCATION=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_12
MY_DOMAIN=triumf.ca

GLITE_EXTERNAL_ROOT=${INSTALL_ROOT}/external
GRID_ENV_LOCATION=${GLITE_EXTERNAL_ROOT}/etc/profile.d

PX_HOST=myproxy.cern.ch
WMS_HOST=rb106.cern.ch
RB_HOST=rb106.cern.ch
BDII_HOST=lcg-bdii.cern.ch
MON_HOST=lcggiis01.$MY_DOMAIN
REG_HOST=lcgic01.gridpp.rl.ac.uk
CA_REPOSITORY="rpm http://linuxsoft.cern.ch/ LCG-CAs/current production"
FUNCTIONS_DIR=$INSTALL_ROOT/glite/yaim/functions

VOS="atlas"
VO_ATLAS_VOMS_SERVERS="'vomss://lcg-voms.cern.ch:8443/voms/atlas?/atlas/' 'vomss://voms.cern.ch:8443/voms/atlas?/atlas/'"
VO_ATLAS_VOMSES="'atlas lcg-voms.cern.ch 15001 /C=CH/O=CERN/OU=GRID/CN=host/lcg-voms.cern.ch atlas' 'atlas voms.cern.ch 15001 /C=CH/O=CERN/OU=GRID/CN=host/voms.cern.ch atlas'"
USERS_CONF=./glite/yaim/examples/users.conf

  • run the installation configuration:
 ./glite/yaim/bin/yaim -c -s glite/site-info.def  -n UI_TAR

Now, whenever you log and want to use grid tools, do

source ~/gLite/etc/profile.d/grid_env.sh
source ~/gLite/etc/profile.d/lcgenv.sh

(or the .csh files if you are using any c-shell variant.)

To submit a job, you need to first do voms-proxy-init and not grid-proxy-init.

Ganga

Ganga is an interface which allows for easy submission of jobs to the grid. Although you can run ganga by sourcing the setup from CERN, this may take sometime to startup. Hence you may want to download a copy to your local machine.

Note that you should download the latest public release; versions older than 4.3.5 will not work withthe ATLAS Data Management System DQ2.

The instructions on the download page do work. Note that you can use wget to download a link; eg.

 wget http://cern.ch/ganga/download/ganga-install

will download the file ganga-install to your directory.

Note Note that I did not have to do these setups for each login as described in the workbook:

> export GANGA_CONFIG_PATH=GangaAtlas/Atlas.ini  [bash] or
> setenv GANGA_CONFIG_PATH GangaAtlas/Atlas.ini  [csh]

In fact, they would result in the passphrase not being accepted.

Next, run ganga for the first time with only a -g option to generate a configuration file:

~/Ganga/install/4.4.1/bin/ganga -g

(You may want to add ~/Ganga/install/4.4.1/bin to your PATH so that you do not have to remember it.)

Now edit the configuration file ~/.gangarc and change / add the following:

  • add the line
RUNTIME_PATH = GangaAtlas
  • enable the following line (you do not need to set GLITE_SETUP if you had installed gLite with the yum method and it is available automatically to anyone who logs in.)
GLITE_ENABLE = True
  • set the ATLAS_SOFTWARE path to point to your kit (this is only needed if you want to use Ganga to run jobs locally rather than on the grid.)
ATLAS_SOFTWARE = /data/Kits
  • set the virtual organization to atlas:
VirtualOrganisation = atlas

To use: if I downloaded version 4.4.1, I would use it by typing the following at the command prompt:

 ~/Ganga/install/4.4.1/bin/ganga --gui

(or leave out the --gui for a command line interface).

Tip, idea Ganga seems to use EDG as the grid middleware tool. To change that to use gLite, do the following from the Ganga prompt:

config["LCG_Properties"]["middleware"]='GLITE'

DQ2

dq2 is the grid data management software used by ATLAS. The client version will be needed if you use Panda instead of Ganga to submit your jobs. To install, click on the link.

You may also have to do the following before using dq2:

export DQ2_COPY_COMMAND='lcg-cp -v --vo atlas'
